Looks like the Giants are trying to turn him into a reliever, as he has made no starts this spring. He was going to be facing Cubs minor leaguers. The first two were easy groundouts.Up stepped Kevonte Mitchell. Mitchell was the Cubs’ 13th round pick in 2014 out of high school in Missouri. His numbers have been middling through five years in the system and he hasn’t played above A ball. He’s 23 and his chances of a big league career are pretty small.Mitchell crushed a Blach pitch and sent it probably 440 feet to dead center field, a monstrous home run that tied the game. Blach induced another groundout after that and the game ended, but I wanted to give Mitchell some props. If he never makes the big leagues, he can say that he hit this home run off a big-league pitcher. The rest of the game was some back-and-forth between Kyle Hendricks and Jeff Samardzija, who were never Cubs teammates, oddly enough, though their combined Cubs tenures go back to 2008. Samardzija was traded to the Athletics five days before Hendricks made his major-league debut; essentially, Kyle took Shark’s place in the Cubs rotation. Hendricks served up a wind-blown home run to Brandon Belt with a runner on in te first inning, and then appeared to tire in the sixth, when three more hits produced another Giants run. In between http://www.bravesfanproshop.com/authentic-nick-markakis-jersey , Hendricks looked pretty good, striking out three and starting a slick double play in the fourth.Meanwhile, Albert Almora Jr. cut that 2-0 first-inning Giants lead in half in the bottom of the inning:The Cubs had some chances to score in the second and third innings but it took another longball, this one by Victor Caratini, to tie the score at 2:Brian Duensing was touched up for a pair of runs in the seventh after he allowed a single and a walk. The runs came in, though, off hits off Brandon Kintzler. So... neither one was impressive in this game. It’s entirely possible that one or both of those guys winds up cut next week.I did want to show you this, Caratini throwing out Yangervis Solarte trying to steal in the sixth inning, with a nice tag applied by Ian Happ:Allen Webster threw a nice 1-2-3 eighth inning with a strikeout, and Brad Brach also retired the side in order in the ninth. Both of those pitchers have a shot at the Opening Day bullpen, but again, those innings were against Giants minor leaguers. One of those minor leaguers was Jacob Heyward, Jason’s younger brother, who was the Giants’ 18th round pick in 2016 out of the University of Miami. There is a strong physical resemblance between the two, except that Jacob is righthanded. The younger Heyward entered as a pinch-runner, scored a run, then Webster struck him out. Jacob Heyward is 23 and likely will play Double-A in the Giants system this year. The Cubs plated a pair of runs in the seventh on a throwing error by Giants reliever Patrick Bergen; then there was Mitchell’s home run, and for the second day in a row Chipper Jones Jersey , Cubs fans departed Sloan Park without a win or loss to the team’s credit.Attendance watch: 15,409, another sellout on a coolish 69-degree afternoon, brought the season total at Sloan to 205,369, or 13,691 per date, with three dates remaining. All three are expected to be sellouts, which means the season total will be somewhere around 250,000. That will shatter the all-time Cubs/Cactus League/spring training total set in 2017 of 226,933. That mark was set in a season of 15 games, with the average that year of 15,129 setting a record. That average mark won’t be broken, as this year’s total of 18 home dates at Sloan will likely result in an average per date of about 13,900.The Cubs have their final split squad date of 2019 Friday. The afternoon affair at Sloan Park will feature Jose Quintana starting for the Cubs and Jordan Romano for the Rangers. Game time at Sloan is 3:05 p.m. CT and there will be TV coverage via WGN and the usual audio webcast on cubs.com. The night game will be against the Indians at Goodyear at 8:05 p.m. CT. Duane Underwood Jr. will go for the Cubs in that game against Cleveland’s Corey Kluber. That game will be on 670 The Score and TV coverage will be via the Indians TV network Sports Time Ohio. Castellani remains a top pitching prospect for the Rockies, despite a tough 2018"WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Scaling the RocksPebble ReportRockpileRockies Game ThreadsRockies Fan ExperienceRockies Minor Leagues and ProspectsColorado Rockies prospect rankings: No. 10, Ryan CastellaniNew,10commentsCastellani remains a top pitching prospect for the Rockies John Smoltz Jersey , despite a tough 2018MSTShareTweetShareShareColorado Rockies prospect rankings: No. 10, Ryan Castellani10. Ryan Castellani (650 points, 32 ballots)This truth is worth repeating when you worry about Ryan Castellani’s struggles in a repeat trip to Double-A in 2018: he was (and still is) just 22 the whole season, 2.4 years younger than the league on average and only four months older than Brady Singer, the #18 overall pick in the 2018 draft. If he’d have gone the college route instead of signing as Colorado’s 2nd round pick in 2014 for $1.1 million, Castellani might only now be emerging from short season ball.Midseason Rank:聽7High Ballot:聽6Mode Ballot:聽11Future Value:聽45, #4 starter or set-up relieverContract Status:聽2014 2nd Round, 40 Man Roster, 3 options remainingMLB ETA:聽2020With that said, Castellani had a tough 2018 in Hartford that knocked him off the smooth prospect path he had enjoyed up until that point. Indeed, 2018 was the first year that Castellani had repeated a level. Before 2018, Castellani had posted four straight seasons with a FIP below 4.00 and had led his league in both innings pitched and strikeouts in 2016 and 2017 while being the youngest ERA qualifier at each level. Something seemed off about Castellani in Spring Training though, and the Rockies sent him back to Double-A to figure it out. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that happened.Castellani made 26 starts in 2018, only one fewer than he did at the level in 2017, but he threw 23 fewer innings in those starts (134 1鈦? total), almost an inning less per start. His ERA was 5.49 (up from 4.81) and his FIP was 5.21 (up from 3.99), while the K/9 (6.1 vs. 7.6) and BB/9 (4.7 vs. 2.7) rates were both worse compared to the prior year as well. It was an up and down season. Castellani had a 2.05 ERA through April but he had a terrible May (8.33 ERA) Matt Kemp Jersey , followed by an average June (4.30 ERA) and an awful July (7.98 ERA). Castellani settled down for a serviceable 3.57 ERA in August before a poor start to end the season in September. Castellani was then selected for the Arizona Fall League, where he posted a 5.13 ERA over 7 starts in which he accumulated 26 1鈦? innings with a nice 10.6 K/9 rate and a still elevated 4.8 BB/9 rate. Here’s some video of Castellani in the AFL, courtesy of 2080 Baseball:In the report accompanying the above video, Adam McInturff of 2080 Baseball provides insights on Castellani based on AFL viewings, including more granular grades on each of his offerings. It’s...not positive. Here was his conclusion for Castellani:In their recent write-up of Colorado’s system, Baseball Prospectus left Castellani out of the system’s top 15. Their thoughts on him were not optimistic:FanGraphs put Castellani 6th in the system with a 45 FV tag in May:It should be noted that the FanGraphs guys also saw Castellani in the AFL and had more positive reports on him there than 2080 did (take a listen on this podcast for more, starting at the 66 minute mark).MLB.com currently has Castellani 10th in the system:The above evaluation is highlighted by 60 fastball and 55 slider grades, accompanied by 50 change-up and 50 control evaluations. Given Castellani’s recent struggles, those may be outdated at this point, but it’s still a compelling repertoire that has starter potential.Obviously this year’s step back has been discouraging for Castellani. Something isn’t quite right with the 6’4” righty and we can only hope he will recover his prior form. He’s got some mechanical issues that need to be worked out, but if he does he’s a solid bet to be a starter at the Major League level, likely in 2020. It’s likely that Castellani will start 2019 in Hartford again, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he climbed the ladder to Triple-A quickly. Given his 40 man roster slot (secured after the 2018 season), it’s possible Castellani sees big league time this year, but if he does it’s because of either a massive injury calamity or a fantastic breakout campaign. Despite the bumps this year, I’m still a believer in Castellani’s potential as a starter, which is why I ranked him 9th in the system with a 45 Future Value tag as a number 4 starter.
