FIFA 20 News: FIFA 20 Won’t Be Exclusive to Amazon India

The biggest issue with FIFA 19 was the gameplay. Before a series of patch updates, we had defenders running into each other, and the game’s meta was being exploited by first-time finesse shots flying into the top corner time and time again. For FIFA 20, the developers need to get it a lot closer to being right when the game is released, with still back post crosses heavily overpowered and defending after a kick-off weirdly difficult. FIFA 19’s sales were 35% lower than FIFA 18 in its first week, and you can only imagine this will worsen for FIFA 20.

So what needs to improve? Well, timed finishing is as brilliant as it is frustrating. We all love to see a ball fly into the top corner from 25 yards, but when it happens again and again, the magic is lost a little bit. Timed finishing needs to be looked at and certainly adjusted. Perhaps only applicable for finesse shots, or drives from range, with timing a one-on-one finish with the goalkeeper fairly redundant.

One thing EA does get right is licensing – but just as sure as night follows day and yellow card follows Etienne Capoue tackle, fans still want more. GR’s recent look at FIFA 20’s most wanted league showcased a FIFPlay poll where the Indonesian and Malaysian leagues alone have collectively amassed 278,000 votes. Bosses of the Vanarama National League are also campaigning to have England’s fifth-tier competition included for the first time. There’s always a danger that official kits and badges are used to mask gameplay issues, but really those two things should be judged independently from another: the man or woman tasked with improving goalkeepers, say, is not the same one rendering Sutton United’s away strip. At least, so you would hope.

While FIFA 19 was delivered in a timely manner, it was mainly due to the fact that Amazon had received shipments early. Despite that, they managed to sell just 21,500 units on Day 1; a figure EA are not too happy with. When online sales stagnated, Amazon India, for what it's worth, attempted to push product offline through a sub-distributor Zupitex, but pricing issues in retail meant the venture was not a huge success. As a result, they are set to discontinue their association, which began way back in 2015, with Amazon India. This would also imply that FIFA 20, which is set for a September release, and many other EA titles including Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and the latest Need for Speed would not be solely available on Amazon India, representing a boost for competitors like Flipkart and offline retail.

Past Amazon India exclusives in gaming have gone poorly like the Xbox One. By going online-only, it pretty much killed the console's chances in India. However since EA's games are ridiculously popular in the country, it's unlikely that the publisher would face the same fate. That said, it is unknown who EA would partner with in India at the moment. Though we strongly suspect it would result in an offline presence that's as valuable as being online in the country. At the time of publishing Gadgets 360 has yet to receive comment from either EA or Amazon India and will update this story if we hear from either company.
